I've always had an adversarial relationship with food and my body. Growing up overweight changes how you look at food and yourself. Food goes from being something meant to nourish, sustain and energize you — to something that must be criticized, controlled and put into neat little boxes of "good" and "bad".
After years of yo-yo dieting and feeling like crap the question I had to ask myself was how do I move forward with weight loss, better health, and more energy from a place that didn't make me feel bad about myself. That's when I stumbled into nutritional therapy and it's played a major role in bringing me back to what I know to be true- We can't dislike ourselves into better nourishment. We can't starve ourselves or berate ourselves into better health and healing. We have to work with our bodies, not against them.
And I like to think that finally, after years of thinking that nutrition was about starving myself or obsessively counting calories, I've come to a place of deeper understanding of what it means to be nourished.
What is Nutritional Therapy?
Nutritional Therapy Practitioners (NTP's) are a part of the alternative, holistic health community. We are trained to identify nutritional deficiencies and work with clients to correct them.
We believe that a nutrient dense, real foods diet is the foundation of health. Our bodies are designed to absorb important nutrients from our diet in order to be healthy . If what we eat does not contain enough of these nutrients or if we lack the ability to sufficiently absorb these nutrients, our bodies will be deficient in vital, life giving nutrients and eventually our health will suffer. This can take the form of decreased energy, fertility issues, digestive problems, autoimmune conditions, mental health issues, skin issues and even weight gain as the body tries to get enough nutrition by over-eating nutrient-poor foods.
